Clearcoat preserves the luster of copper paint
Clearcoat protects copper paint from aging blocks the causes of copper aging, leaving a shiny surface. For those who want to halt any aging of the copper flakes that is mixed in with the coating, read these tips carefully.
Tip #1: Test the copper liquid paint to insure the coating is entirely cured. Press and twist thumb against coating. THIS THUMB TEST IS VERY IMPORTANT! Any sign of your thumb’s imprint…allow the coating additional drying time. Reason for waiting: Clearcoat will “suck up” any drying paint, causing a cloudy look.
Tip #2: Apply clearcoat as you would nail polish to your nails (or, if you are a guy, a morning shave)–once quickly. Avoid working the brush into the coating. If you see any paint on the brush, STOP. Refer to Tip #1 above.
Tip #3: Apply second clearcoat application as above in order to cover the spots missed by the first coat. If you leave any exposed paint, that area will age…..in most cases, blocking the aging is why you are applying clearcoat.
Tip #4: If you do not like what you have done, just recoat with the copper paint.
Tip #5: Feedback from customers suggest the use of clearcoat indoors is not nearly as important for preserving the sheen since the moisture level is well controlled.
Tip #6: Clearcoat is strongly recommended on shelves, counter tops, and other indoor uses where cleansers will be used. The clearcoat allows for a smoother surface and protects the copper flakes from the household cleaners.
In Manassas, VA, Sherry and Don forwarded this photo where he applied three quarts of Clearcoat over three gallons of copper liquid paint roofing: “Just a note to let you know we really liked the paint. I have attached pictures for you. I think the tin roof looks just like new. Thanks for you help with everything!”
From the owner Dale: After several years of copper liquid paint on the gutters and downspouts…..top coated with clearcoat, the original shine of the copper still sparkles. This cabin #33A is one of the 2 bedroom rentals at The Redwoods in Yosemite. His reorder for additional applications made my day.
